Mikis Theodorakis

I chose Mikis Theodorakis "The Solitary Swallow" for the theatrical production of Penelope and Ulysses because of his involvement in exposing the tyranny and injustices at the time of the dictatorship in Greece. For millions of people, Theodorakis was the symbol of resistance.
When he met poet Pablo Neruda he promised to compose Canto General, a collection of poetry by Neruda that also spoke out against tyranny. I also chose "The Solitary Swallow" by the Greek poet, Odysseas Elytis, because it speaks about our longing and desire to be united rather than divided, and our human compassion for all who are caught up in the diversity of struggles that found and lost in our human condition. Maria Faradereo sings it and the music was composed by Mikis Theodorakis. I desired to show unity and strength at the closing of the play: "If we want the sun to return We have much work to do together." I feel gratitude for the support that Mikis Theodorakis offered me through the messages that his secretary sent to me when giving me persmission to have "The Solitary Swallow" in the closing of my play, Penelope and Ulysses. |
